Award Travel

Award Travel Guide

How to use points and miles to book flights (and upgrades) for free — or nearly free. It's simpler than you think.

1

Earn Transferable Points

Use a card that earns flexible currency — Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, or Capital One Miles. These can transfer to airlines, giving you the most options.

2

Find Award Space

Use tools like Seats.aero, Award Hacker, or the airline's own website to search for award availability before transferring. Always confirm space first.

3

Transfer & Book

Once you find the award, transfer your points to the airline program. Transfers are usually instant for Chase and Amex. Then book directly with the airline using your newly transferred miles.

Strategy

Maximize Your Points

Pro strategies to squeeze the most value from every dollar you spend — whether you're chasing sign-up bonuses or building a long-term rewards strategy.

🎯

Always Hit the Minimum Spend

Sign-up bonuses are the fastest way to accumulate points. The Chase Sapphire Preferred 60,000-point bonus alone is worth $750–$1,500 in travel.

  • Set up autopay and bills on the new card
  • Pre-pay insurance or subscriptions
  • Pay annual expenses (car insurance, etc.)
🃏

Use the Right Card for Each Purchase

No single card is best for every category. Build a "card stack" where you maximize every purchase:

  • Amex Gold → dining & groceries (4×)
  • Chase Sapphire → travel (3×)
  • Citi Double Cash → everything else (2%)
🔄

Transfer Points at the Right Time

Never transfer points until you have a specific award in mind. Points are worth more as flexible currency than locked into one program. Always check transfer ratios first — occasionally programs offer 25–40% transfer bonuses.

✈️

Fly Business Class for Economy Prices

A New York to Tokyo business class ticket can cost $8,000+ in cash. With 90,000 Chase points transferred to ANA, you can often book the same seat.

  • Book early — award space is limited
  • Use partner airlines (often cheaper than direct)
  • Be flexible on dates using tools like Seats.aero
