Our Mission
The credit card market is one of the most heavily marketed in personal finance — and one of the most confusing. Banks spend billions promoting products that earn them the most, not necessarily the cards that earn you the most.
CardCompass exists to fix that. We built a free comparison and recommendation engine so that anyone — regardless of financial background or expertise — can find the card that maximizes their rewards in under 60 seconds.
Editorial Independence
Our rankings and scores are determined by our methodology, never by who pays us more.
Always Free
CardCompass is free for consumers. We earn through affiliate commissions when cards are approved — never from you.
Data-Driven
Every card score is calculated from real earning rates, fee math, and bonus valuations — not opinions.
How CardCompass Works
We combine a card database, a scoring engine, and a 60-second quiz to give you a personalized recommendation — no account required.
Tell us how you spend
Our quiz asks about your top spending categories — dining, travel, groceries, gas, and more — so we can weight earnings to your actual habits.
We run the math
We calculate projected annual earnings from every card in our database based on your spending profile, factoring in annual fees and bonus values.
You get ranked recommendations
Your top matches are ranked by net annual value — what you'd actually pocket after fees, using your real spending numbers.
Compare and decide
Use our side-by-side comparison tool to dig into any cards you're considering — APR, perks, pros and cons — before you apply.
How We Rate Credit Cards
Every card in our database receives a CardCompass Score from 0–5, calculated from six weighted factors. Here is exactly how that score is built:
Annual rewards earnings modeled against Bureau of Labor Statistics average U.S. household spending: $5,800 groceries, $3,500 dining, $2,200 gas, $3,000 travel. We calculate the dollar value of points, miles, or cash back earned per year.
Sign-up bonus amortized over 24 months. We value points at their most common redemption rate: Chase Ultimate Rewards at 1.5¢, Amex Membership Rewards at 1.4¢, Capital One miles at 1¢. Cash bonuses at face value.
Annual fee subtracted from estimated annual rewards earnings. Cards with statement credits (travel credits, dining credits, hotel nights) have those credits counted toward offsetting the fee — only at face value, never inflated.
How easy and how valuable it is to redeem rewards. Cash back scores highest (1¢ = 1¢, always). Flexible points with transfer partners score second. Locked airline/hotel currencies score lower due to award devaluations and blackout dates.
Credit score requirements and approval likelihood. Cards with lower credit requirements score better in this factor. Premium cards requiring excellent credit (740+) score lower here — this is intentional to help users find cards they can actually get approved for.
For travel-category cards, a 3% foreign transaction fee meaningfully reduces the card's net value for international use. Cards with no FTF score full marks here; cards with an FTF are penalized proportionally.
Data Sources
All card data is sourced directly from issuer websites (Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi, etc.) and cross-checked against NerdWallet and The Points Guy for verification. We do not use scrapers — every data point is manually verified by our team on a quarterly schedule (January, April, July, October) and updated immediately when we are notified of changes.
Staleness Flags
When a card's welcome bonus or annual fee has not been verified in more than 90 days, we display a “Verify offer” flag on the card. This signals that you should confirm the current terms with the issuer before applying. We prefer flagging uncertainty over silently showing potentially outdated numbers.
What the Score Does Not Measure
The CardCompass Score is a quantitative model, not a complete picture. It does not account for: customer service quality, mobile app ratings, specific household spending that differs substantially from the U.S. average, or how a card fits into an existing rewards ecosystem (e.g., pairing with another card). Use the score as a starting point, not a final verdict.
Transparency About How We Earn
CardCompass is free to use because we earn affiliate commissions when you click "Apply Now" and are approved for a card. This is standard practice in personal finance publishing and allows us to keep the tools free.
Compensation never influences our rankings or scores. Cards are ranked by their calculated value to you — not by how much they pay us. For full details, see our Advertiser Disclosure.
